GPL Invites Bids for 15 MWp Solar PV System in Linden

Georgetown, Guyana – Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) has formally invited bids for the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) of a significant renewable energy project in Linden. The tender calls for the development of a 15-megawatt peak (MWp) ground-mounted solar photovoltaic system, which will be integrated with a 22-megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

This initiative, identified as tender GUYSOL-ICB-002-2024, is a core component of the Guyana Utility Scale Solar Photovoltaic Program (GUYSOL). The program is a cornerstone of the nation’s strategy to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on diesel fuel. President Irfaan Ali has confirmed that while contracts for similar projects in Berbice and Essequibo are already secured, the procurement process for the Linden facility is now actively underway.

Funding for the GUYSOL program is drawn from the Guyana-Norway Partnership, with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) overseeing its administration. This financial backing supports a wider national effort to install eight utility-scale solar PV plants across Linden, Berbice, and Essequibo. These installations are designed to feed clean energy into the Demerara-Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS).

The broader $83.3 million GUYSOL initiative includes an 8 MWp solar farm with 12 MWh of storage for the Essequibo coast and a 10 MWp system for the Berbice region. Collectively, these projects are expected to provide clean, affordable power to approximately 27,000 households, benefiting over 70,000 people. According to the IDB, the transition will significantly lower CO2 emissions and reduce electricity costs for consumers.

In addition to its environmental and economic benefits, the program incorporates social development goals. A portion of the funding has been allocated for training women and individuals with disabilities in solar installation, fostering inclusive growth within Guyana’s expanding renewable energy sector. Upon completion, Guyana’s energy landscape will feature 14 new solar farms and 28 solar mini-grids, marking a substantial step towards a sustainable energy future.
