Guyana solar mini-grids: 21 Stunning Installations by 2026

Guyana to Install 21 New Solar Mini-Grids in 2026

Guyana is set to significantly expand its renewable energy infrastructure with an ambitious plan to install 21 new solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grids across the country in 2026. This major initiative, announced by Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips during the 2026 national budget discussions, underscores the government’s commitment to providing reliable, low-cost, and sustainable energy to all its citizens, particularly those in remote and underserved areas.

A Major Leap for Hinterland and Riverine Communities with Guyana solar mini-grids

The core of the 2026 plan is the construction and installation of 21 solar mini-grids designed to bring clean power to hinterland, riverine, and regional communities. This development is a crucial part of the government’s “Putting People First” budget, aiming to improve the quality of life and foster economic opportunities outside of the coastal belt.

Construction is already underway on these projects, which are expected to power an additional 240 public and community buildings by the end of 2026. This includes essential facilities such as schools, health centers, and village offices, ensuring that vital services can operate more efficiently and reliably. The initiative is projected to directly benefit more than 12,300 residents, marking a transformative step towards bridging the energy gap between the coast and the hinterland.

Building on a Foundation of Green Investment in Guyana solar mini-grids

This new phase of solar expansion builds upon a strong foundation laid between 2020 and 2025. During that period, the government invested $25.4 billion into green energy projects, which successfully increased the nation’s renewable capacity sevenfold, from 5.35 MW to an impressive 37.23 MW.

These prior investments have already yielded significant results, creating over 4,500 jobs in construction, installation, operations, and maintenance. Furthermore, the shift to solar has had a tangible environmental impact, saving an estimated 29,919 drums of diesel and preventing 13,247 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The 2026 initiative is set to accelerate these positive trends.

A Broader National Strategy for Renewable Energy and Guyana solar mini-grids

The installation of 21 mini-grids is a key component of a much larger, comprehensive national energy strategy. The government’s plans for 2026 also include several other significant renewable energy projects:

  • Upgrading Existing Systems: Alongside the new installations, existing solar systems will be upgraded to enhance their capacity and efficiency.
  • Large-Scale Solar Plants: A new three-megawatt solar plant is slated for construction at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, and a larger 25 MW solar project is planned for Linden.
  • Powering Public and Agricultural Sectors: The government will equip 75 government facilities with 208 kW of solar PV. Additionally, six agro-processing sites will be outfitted with 167.75 kW of solar PV and battery storage systems to bolster local production and food security.

By focusing on a diverse portfolio of solar projects, from community mini-grids to large-scale plants, Guyana is strategically paving the way for a sustainable and energy-independent future. This multi-pronged approach aims to reduce the nation’s reliance on fossil fuels, lower energy costs, and stimulate economic growth in key sectors like manufacturing and agriculture.
