Boliden Somincor’s 49 MWp Solar Plant to Power Portugal Mine

In a significant stride towards sustainable industrial operations, Boliden Somincor is launching a major renewable energy project at its Neves-Corvo mine in Portugal. The company is developing a 49 MWp solar plant, set to become the country’s largest for self-consumption, directly powering its mining activities and marking a new era for green energy in the European mining sector.

A Landmark Project: The Portugal mine solar plant

This ambitious project is a collaborative effort between Boliden Somincor, EDP Comercial, and Greenvolt Next. The partnership will see the construction of a large-scale photovoltaic installation spanning approximately 55 hectares, all located within the existing mining concession in Castro Verde.

The primary goal is to generate clean, renewable electricity to meet a substantial portion of the mine’s energy demands. Once fully operational, the solar plant is expected to supply nearly 100 GWh of power annually. This will cover about one-third (33%) of the Neves-Corvo mine’s total electricity consumption, significantly reducing its reliance on the traditional power grid.

Environmental and Economic Impact of the Portugal mine solar plant

The transition to solar power will yield considerable environmental benefits. The project is projected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 41,000 tonnes each year. This reduction is a cornerstone of Boliden Somincor’s decarbonization strategy and a tangible contribution to Portugal’s climate goals.

Beyond the environmental advantages, the solar plant will enhance the mine’s energy independence and provide a buffer against the volatility of the electricity market. This move ensures a more stable and predictable energy cost structure for the long term.

The project is also a boon for the local economy in the Baixo Alentejo region. The construction phase will involve around 200 local workers, providing valuable employment opportunities and stimulating regional economic activity.

Partnership and Timeline of the Portugal mine solar plant

Under the terms of the agreement, EDP and Greenvolt will manage the construction, supply the necessary equipment, and oversee the expansion of the substation. This partnership is established for a minimum of 12 years, ensuring long-term operational excellence and maintenance.

The plant is scheduled to be fully operational in the second half of 2026. This timeline positions Boliden Somincor as a leader in integrating renewable energy into heavy industry, setting a powerful precedent for mining operations across Europe and beyond.
