Indonesia’s PLN Launches Landmark 1.2 GW Solar Tender Across Archipelago
In a decisive move to accelerate its clean energy transition, Indonesia’s state-owned electricity utility, PT PLN (Persero), has officially launched a tender for 1,225 MW of utility-scale solar projects. The initiative, named PLTS Mentari Nusantara I, was announced on April 30, 2026, and marks a significant step towards the nation’s ambitious renewable energy targets.
A New Procurement Model: The ‘GIGA ONE’ Initiative for Indonesia solar project tender: Stunning 1.2 GW PLN Plan
This massive undertaking is being managed under an innovative integrated procurement scheme dubbed ‘GIGA ONE.’ According to official sources, this strategy consolidates multiple solar projects into a single, comprehensive package. The approach is designed to achieve economies of scale, enhance the bankability of the projects, and ultimately boost investor confidence. By bundling development, PLN aims to streamline the process and create a more attractive proposition for partners, contributing directly to Indonesia’s goal of reaching 100 GW of solar capacity.
Strategic Distribution for National Impact
The 1.2 GW of new solar capacity will not be concentrated in one area but distributed strategically across several key regions to bolster the national grid. The planned allocation is a testament to the project’s nationwide scope:
- Java: 600 MW
- Kalimantan: 340 MW
- Maluku and Papua: 120 MW
- West Nusa Tenggara: 80 MW
- Sulawesi: 50 MW
- Sumatra: 35 MW
This distribution ensures that the energy-hungry island of Java receives a substantial boost while also extending the benefits of renewable power to more remote eastern provinces.
Doubling Down on Solar Ambitions
The Mentari Nusantara I project is set to nearly double Indonesia’s total installed solar capacity, which stood at 1.49 GW in 2025. With a target commercial operation date of 2029, this tender represents a monumental leap forward, solidifying the country’s commitment to harnessing its vast solar potential. This plan firmly positions Indonesia as a key player in Southeast Asia’s rapidly expanding renewable energy landscape.
