Indore is rapidly emerging as a leader in India’s renewable energy transition, with a remarkable surge in solar power adoption. In the first five months of 2024 alone, the city saw more than 4,000 new consumers embrace rooftop solar, a testament to a powerful combination of government incentives and growing public awareness.
Indore Gravitates Towards Solar Energy With 4K+ New Consumers
This explosive growth is largely credited to the federal government’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, a 2024 initiative designed to make solar energy more accessible for households. The program offers significant financial support, with subsidies of up to ₹78,000 for systems of 3 kW or more, credited directly to the consumer’s bank account. This incentive structure has proven highly effective, making Indore the third-ranked city nationwide for installations under the scheme and doubling both its solar customer base and capacity between 2023 and 2024.
The policy has been instrumental in helping Indore achieve a major milestone: crossing 100 MW in total solar capacity. As of early 2024, the city boasted nearly 13,500 rooftop solar connections, collectively generating close to 100 MW of clean power.
Economic and Practical Incentives
Beyond the initial subsidies, the net metering policy provides a compelling long-term financial benefit. This system allows homeowners and businesses to sell any surplus electricity generated by their solar panels back to the grid, effectively reducing their electricity bills and maximizing the return on their investment. This policy has made Indore a regional leader, with the city accounting for approximately 8,500 of the 14,000 net metering consumers across the broader Malwa and Nimar regions.
Local businesses are also catalyzing this growth. Companies like Freyr Energy have established a significant presence, completing over 300 projects totaling 1.5 MW and opening a Solar Experience Centre to provide residents with direct access to information and technology demonstrations.
A National Trend with Local Impact
Indore’s success is a reflection of a nationwide solar boom. In 2024, India added a record 3.2 GW of rooftop solar capacity, marking an 86% year-over-year increase. This transition carries profound benefits, from reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving air quality to stimulating the local economy through job creation in installation and maintenance.
Through strategic government support, community engagement, and the adoption of advanced technology, Indore is not only harnessing its abundant sunlight but also setting a powerful example for other cities. This enthusiastic adoption paves the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future for the entire region.
