Amid a surge in Ireland’s renewable energy sector, marked by large-scale commercial projects like PepsiCo’s 3,400-panel installation in Cork, one local firm is making a significant impact on both the residential and business landscape. Wizer Energy, a fast-growing company, has established a new 9,000 sq ft headquarters in Cork’s Ballytrasna Business Park, positioning itself at the heart of the nation’s green transition.
The company’s operational scale underscores the accelerating demand for solar energy solutions. With a team of over 50 employees and a fleet of 22 vans, Wizer Energy is currently completing approximately 20 residential solar system installations each week. This rapid pace contributes to the more than 17,000 solar installations recorded across Ireland in the past year, a trend driven by government incentives like SEAI grants.
Demonstrating a firm commitment to sustainability, Wizer Energy leads by example. The company has equipped its new facility with a 30kWp solar PV and storage system, supplemented by an advanced electrical infrared heating system, to achieve near-total energy independence. “By powering our building, we’re doing more than just talking,” stated Managing Director Martin Desmond, a former electrician who retrained as an electrical engineer and founded the company.
Desmond’s entry into the solar market was a strategic move based on foresight. Recognizing a significant gap in Ireland’s renewable infrastructure back in 2015, he anticipated the sector’s potential long before it became mainstream. “I recognised an industry boom was coming, so I put every effort into getting into this market early and for the long haul,” Desmond explained. “The market has grown and evolved since then, with government aid fuelling the sector, which is clear from the proliferation of new companies in this space.”
