Amman, Jordan – In a move to accelerate its national green growth strategy, Jordan’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced on May 27, 2024, a tender for comprehensive solar energy system projects across 40 municipalities. The initiative targets communities in the northern provinces, including 19 municipalities in Irbid, 13 in Mafraq, and a combined 8 in Jerash and Ajloun.
The tender, with offers due by June 23, 2024, covers the complete project lifecycle, encompassing design, supply, installation, grid connection, operation, and ongoing maintenance of the solar systems. This effort represents the second phase of a wider national program to equip municipal buildings with renewable energy sources, significantly reducing their operational costs and environmental footprint.

This phase builds on the success of the initial stage, which was completed last year. The first phase outfitted 30 municipal buildings with 570 kilowatts of solar capacity at a cost of half a million Jordanian dinars. The current, more ambitious second phase aims to install up to 2,850 kilowatts across 144 buildings in 70 municipalities, with this tender covering 40 of them.
The ministry projects significant annual returns from these installations, including electricity savings exceeding 1,150 megawatt-hours and financial savings of approximately 245,000 Jordanian dinars (around $350,000). Environmentally, the project is expected to displace nearly 527 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, directly contributing to Jordan’s climate action goals.
Beyond the hardware, the project includes a crucial human capital component. Valued at 1 million Jordanian dinars, this phase incorporates capacity-building workshops to train municipal employees in the operation and maintenance of the new systems. This commitment to local skill development is designed to ensure the long-term sustainability of the installations and foster a knowledgeable renewable energy workforce.
The ultimate vision for the program is to bring solar power to 100 municipalities throughout the kingdom, achieving a total installed capacity of 3.6 megawatts. This strategic initiative underscores Jordan’s dedication to reducing its reliance on fossil fuels, promoting sustainable development, and empowering local governments with clean, cost-effective energy solutions.
