Latvia’s Largest Single-Site Solar Plant Begins Operations in Jēkabpils
Latvia has taken a monumental step forward in its renewable energy journey with the launch of its largest single-site solar plant. Located in the Jēkabpils region of southeastern Latvia, this new facility is not just a win for the country but a significant milestone for the entire Baltic region. Developed by the Lithuanian renewable energy company Green Genius, the solar park is now officially operational.
A Project of Unprecedented Scale: The Latvia solar plant
The new Jēkabpils solar plant boasts an impressive capacity of 120.8 MW, making it the largest single-site solar project in the Baltic States. The sheer scale of the facility is remarkable, spanning 3.5 kilometers and covering an area equivalent to 215 football pitches.
This ambitious project, which represents a €96 million ($113.1 million) investment from Green Genius, is powered by 183,000 solar modules. The energy they capture is managed by a network of 312 inverters and eleven transformer substations, efficiently converting sunlight into clean electricity for the grid.
More Than Just Solar Panels: A Hybrid Energy Hub in Latvia solar plant
Green Genius’s vision extends beyond just solar generation. The company is already constructing a 50 MW/100 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) on-site. This addition will transform the facility into a cutting-edge hybrid energy hub, combining large-scale solar power generation with significant storage capabilities. This integration allows for a more stable and reliable energy supply, storing excess power generated during peak sunlight hours and releasing it when demand is high or the sun isn’t shining.
According to Ruslanas Sklepovičius, CEO of Green Genius, projects of this magnitude are crucial for the region’s energy landscape. He highlighted that such developments significantly increase local power generation, which in turn reduces dependence on energy imports and enhances overall market stability.
A Growing Portfolio in a Thriving Region: Latvia solar plant
This landmark project is part of a broader expansion for Green Genius, whose operational solar capacity reached 190 MW last year. The company continues to grow, with a vast 2.7 GW portfolio of projects currently under development across six different European countries.
The launch of the Jēkabpils plant signifies a growing trend in Latvia’s renewable energy sector. It follows another major project from the previous year, when Lithuania’s Ignitis Renewables began commercial operations at a 94 MW solar facility in western Latvia. The new Green Genius plant now sets a higher benchmark, underscoring the accelerating pace of clean energy adoption in the Baltics.
