In a significant push for renewable energy in West Africa, Sun Africa has secured exclusive rights to develop two massive solar and storage projects in Liberia and Sierra Leone. Each project boasts a capacity of 150 MW, signaling a major step towards enhancing clean energy access and aligning with the region’s sustainable development goals.
Sun Africa’s Liberia Sierra Leone solar Projects
US-based Sun Africa Inc. has entered into agreements with the governments of Liberia and Sierra Leone to build two landmark solar and storage facilities. These initiatives represent a growing trend of clean energy investment in the region, complementing other developments like the recent launch of a Sierra Leone solar project that brings clean energy to underserved regions and a new Liberia solar power: Impressive 23.75 MW plant unveiled in Monrovia.
The projects are set to begin with comprehensive feasibility studies and environmental assessments, slated for completion by the end of next year. Each facility will pair 150 MW of solar power generation with a 150 MWh battery energy storage system. In Liberia, the plant will be located in Clay Ashland, Montserrado County, while Sierra Leone’s facility will be constructed in Bo District.
Funding and Project Scope
To bring these ambitious projects to life, Sun Africa has already secured financing commitments from the Export-Import Bank of the United States (US Exim Bank) and the Development Finance Corporation (DFC). Following the successful completion of the initial assessments, the company will formalize power purchase agreements with the respective national utilities: Liberia Electricity Corporation and Sierra Leone’s Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority.

The solar Industry is Booming
WE HELP NEWCOMERS to the solar industry start their own solar module production line. Customers can make BIG PROFITS by selling modules and finding investors, without wasting money and time on things they don't need!
The project scope includes the full development of a solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant, which involves a detailed solar panel manufacturing process to create the modules that will capture the sun’s energy. A crucial component is the integrated battery energy storage system, designed to ensure a stable and reliable power supply even when the sun isn’t shining. To deliver this clean energy to homes and businesses, the projects also entail building essential grid infrastructure, including the installation of a 225 kV transmission line.
Sun Africa’s Renewable Energy Initiatives in Africa
These projects in Liberia and Sierra Leone are part of Sun Africa’s broader, continent-wide strategy to deploy renewable energy solutions. The company is a key player in a wave of investment focused on solar storage in Africa, with deals growing in 2024.
Sun Africa’s current portfolio includes:
* Finalizing a 237 MW solar and storage project in Angola valued at $600 million.
* Developing a 700 MW solar and storage facility in Chad, backed by a $1.2 billion loan from US Exim Bank.
* Working on a massive 1.85 GW solar and storage project in Botswana, funded by a $3.2 billion loan from US Exim Bank.
* A 300 MW solar and storage project in Guinea, a country aiming to significantly expand its solar capacity, supported by a $1.1 billion loan from the same bank.
Sun Africaโs commitment, bolstered by significant international financial backing, underscores a pivotal moment for West Africa’s energy landscape. These initiatives are not just about building power plants; they are about fostering energy independence, driving economic growth, and creating a sustainable future for the entire region.
