Turkish Energy Minister Attends Libya Energy Summit
Türkiye is deepening its energy partnership with Libya, a move underscored by the recent visit of Turkish Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, Alparslan Bayraktar, to Tripoli. The minister attended the Libya Energy and Economy Summit (LEES) 2026, a key event aimed at revitalizing the nation’s energy sector and fostering international collaboration.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation at the Libya energy summit
During his visit, Minister Bayraktar engaged in high-level discussions with Libyan officials, including a productive meeting with Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh. The talks centered on expanding energy cooperation between the two nations, with a focus on tangible projects in hydrocarbon exploration, production, and trade. Both sides emphasized building these initiatives on a foundation of mutual trust and long-term sustainability.
In addition to his participation in the summit, Bayraktar also chaired the 22nd Term Türkiye–Libya Joint Economic Commission meeting, further signaling the comprehensive nature of the bilateral relationship. The minister has been vocal about the potential for collaboration, previously stating that “2026 will be the year of energy cooperation between Türkiye and Libya.”
The Libya Energy and Economy Summit
The LEES 2026 serves as a critical platform for Libya to showcase its energy potential to the world. The three-day event, supported by Libya’s Prime Ministry, Ministry of Oil and Gas, and the National Oil Corporation (NOC), brings together government officials and representatives from international energy companies. Minister Bayraktar was a featured speaker at the summit, where he also held a series of bilateral meetings to advance specific energy projects.
A New Era for Libya’s Energy Sector
This renewed focus on energy cooperation comes at a pivotal time for Libya. The country’s National Oil Corporation recently awarded five new oil exploration blocks, marking its first licensing round since 2007. This development signals Libya’s intent to attract foreign investment and boost its production capacity.
The visit also builds upon the 2019 maritime agreement between Türkiye and Libya, which has paved the way for Turkish exploration activities in the region. This strategic alignment reflects Türkiye’s broader vision for regional stability and the development of multi-dimensional alliances. As Libya works to rebuild and modernize its energy infrastructure, its partnership with Türkiye is poised to play a crucial role in its economic future.
