SolarEdge Partners for 50 MW Rooftop Solar in Lithuania
A landmark partnership is set to accelerate Lithuania’s green energy transition. Smart energy leader SolarEdge Technologies has joined forces with Ignitis Group, Lithuania’s largest energy utility, to deploy a massive 50 MW rooftop solar portfolio across the country. This collaboration marks one of the most significant rooftop solar projects in the Baltic region, signaling a major step forward in achieving national and European Union renewable energy targets.
Announced in late 2023, this ambitious project will see solar installations rolled out across numerous commercial and industrial (C&I) sites, with work commencing in 2024.
Powering a Greener Future with Lithuania rooftop solar: Project Scope and Impact
The 50 MW portfolio is more than just a number; it represents a substantial contribution to Lithuania’s clean energy supply. Once fully operational, the project is expected to generate enough clean electricity to power approximately 15,000 households annually. This will result in a significant environmental benefit, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 40,000 tons each year.
This initiative aligns perfectly with Ignitis Group’s strategic investment plan, which dedicates over €1 billion to renewable energy development through 2030. For Lithuania, it’s a critical move to enhance energy independence and build a more sustainable future.
The Technology Driving Efficiency and Safety
At the heart of this project is SolarEdge’s comprehensive smart energy solution. The portfolio will leverage the company’s advanced inverter and storage systems, designed to maximize energy production, ensure operational safety, and provide long-term reliability.
Key components of the deployment include:
- HD-Wave Inverters and Power Optimizers: SolarEdge’s signature module-level power electronics (MLPE) technology is a core feature. Power optimizers are installed on each solar module, allowing for individual panel monitoring and performance optimization. This mitigates power losses from shading or soiling and boosts the system’s overall efficiency, which can reach up to 99% CEC-weighted efficiency.
- Enhanced Safety: The technology includes an integrated rapid shutdown feature, a critical safety measure that de-energizes modules in case of an emergency, protecting installers and firefighters.
- Energy Storage and Future-Proofing: The project utilizes SolarEdge’s StorEdge systems for effective energy storage. This allows businesses to store excess solar power for use during peak demand or when the sun isn’t shining. The system’s architecture also supports seamless integration with future technologies, including EV charging solutions.
