Loblaw rooftop solar: Impressive 2025 Project in Canada

Loblaw Companies Limited has unveiled plans for a record-setting renewable energy initiative, commissioning what will be Canada’s largest rooftop solar installation. The project will be situated at the company’s East Gwillimbury Distribution Centre in Ontario. Developed in partnership with Great Circle Solar, the massive 7.5-megawatt system is slated to become operational in 2026. This move underscores a significant corporate investment in green energy, showcasing how industrial rooftops can be transformed into major power generation assets, a trend seen in projects globally like the one at Dubai’s international airport.

Project Scale and Energy Impact

Spanning approximately 435,000 square feet—an area equivalent to seven Canadian football fields—the installation represents a new benchmark for commercial solar in the country. Once active, the system is projected to generate over 8.5 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity each year. This output is substantial enough to supply up to 25 percent of the distribution centre’s total energy requirements. Clarke Herring, President of Great Circle Solar, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “It is by far the largest of its kind ever contracted in Canada and one of the largest on a single rooftop in North America.” The scale is comparable to other ambitious energy projects in Canada, such as the solar farm at the Diavik Diamond Mine, which also adapts renewable technology for industrial needs.

A Long-Term Commitment to Renewable Energy

This project builds upon a long-standing collaboration between Loblaw and Great Circle Solar, a partnership that has resulted in over 90 distributed energy initiatives since 2012. By significantly expanding its solar capacity, Loblaw reinforces its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and leading the private sector in sustainable practices. This investment in domestic renewable energy infrastructure comes as the North American solar supply chain continues to grow, with major players like Canadian Solar expanding production to meet rising demand.

Corporate Leadership in Canada’s Green Transition

As Canada pursues its national climate goals, large-scale corporate projects like Loblaw’s East Gwillimbury installation play a crucial role. Such private-sector leadership provides a powerful counterpoint to the volatility that can sometimes affect public green energy programs, such as the recent cancellation of a major federal initiative. By leveraging its vast real estate assets for clean energy generation, Loblaw is not only advancing its own environmental targets but also setting a powerful precedent for other Canadian businesses to follow.
