Lyten Finalizes Northvolt Acquisition
In a landmark move for the global battery industry, advanced materials company Lyten has officially completed its acquisition of Northvolt’s Swedish assets. The deal, valued at nearly $5 billion, marks a significant expansion of Lyten’s manufacturing and research capabilities, positioning the company as a major force in the European energy storage market.
Strategic Assets Acquired for Lyten lithium-sulfur battery Production
The acquisition encompasses Northvolt’s key facilities in Sweden, including the Northvolt Ett and Ett Expansion battery manufacturing plants in SkellefteÃ¥, and the advanced Northvolt Labs research and development center in VästerÃ¥s. This transaction provides Lyten with an immediate and substantial footprint, securing 16 GWh of existing battery manufacturing capacity, over 160 hectares of land, and what is considered Europe’s largest battery research center.
Lyten plans to restart operations at the Northvolt Ett facility promptly. The company expects to begin commercial production of lithium-ion NMC cells in the second half of 2026. These initial cells are designated to supply Lyten’s battery energy storage systems (BESS) manufacturing facility located in Gdansk, Poland.
The Lyten Industrial Hub: An Integrated Vision for Lyten lithium-sulfur battery
As part of the deal, Lyten is launching the Lyten Industrial Hub at the SkellefteÃ¥ site. This forward-thinking initiative will co-locate battery manufacturing with other industrial activities, most notably AI data centers. The strategic vision is to create a symbiotic ecosystem that leverages the site’s access to abundant and clean hydropower, fostering a sustainable model for high-tech industrial development.
Accelerating Research and New Technology for Lyten lithium-sulfur battery
The Northvolt Labs facility will continue to play a crucial role in battery innovation. Under Lyten’s stewardship, the lab will maintain its development of long-life lithium-ion NMC cells. Critically, it will also support the industrialization and scale-up of Lyten’s proprietary lithium-sulfur battery technology, working in close collaboration with the company’s core team in Silicon Valley.
A Component of a Larger European Strategy for Lyten lithium-sulfur battery
This Swedish acquisition is a cornerstone of a broader transaction involving Northvolt’s manufacturing assets across several countries. It follows Lyten’s successful acquisition of Northvolt’s BESS facility in Gdansk, Poland, in October 2025, and the company is also moving forward with the takeover of Northvolt assets in Heide, Germany.
The full acquisition of Northvolt’s assets, which hold a combined book value of $5 billion, is being funded through a mix of equity investments from North American and European investors, alongside capital from the EdgeConneX data center investment. By securing these advanced facilities, Lyten is not only scaling its production capacity but is also poised to accelerate the commercialization of its next-generation battery technologies for a global market.
