Sembcorp’s Manah 2 Solar Project Launches Ahead of Schedule

Singapore-based Sembcorp Utilities has commenced commercial operations for its 588 MW solar project in Oman. This milestone comes more than four months ahead of schedule, marking a significant step in the country's renewable energy push.

Omanโ€™s Renewable Energy Expansion

The Manah II solar project is located in the Ad Dakhiliyah governorate in northeastern Oman. Sembcorp developed it in partnership with Jinko Power. The facility operates under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company.

Oman had 672 MW of installed solar capacity at the end of 2023, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The country has been actively working to increase its clean energy portfolio. The Manah II solar project along with the 500 MW Manah I project developed by EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power will bring Omanโ€™s solar capacity closer to its target.

Technical and Financial Impact

The Manah II solar project has an installed peak capacity of 588 MW. It is expected to contribute significantly to Omanโ€™s energy grid, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The facility will supply 500 MW of electricity under the PPA agreement, ensuring stable power generation for the next two decades.

For Sembcorp, the project is a key part of its global renewable energy strategy. The company has invested in Asia's low-carbon industrial parks and green energy projects. It announced a $528.5 million investment in green energy initiatives last year.

The early completion of Manah II is a testament to Sembcorpโ€™s efficient project execution. The company has completed all required acceptance tests ahead of schedule. This achievement is expected to boost Sembcorpโ€™s earnings per share while maintaining its net tangible asset value for the financial year.

Future Prospects and Sustainability Goals

The Manah II project strengthens Omanโ€™s position as a leader in renewable energy within the Middle East. It aligns with the countryโ€™s broader energy transition goals under Oman Vision 2040. By diversifying its energy mix, Oman aims to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance energy security.

The solar project also underscores the role of public-private partnerships in driving sustainable development. Collaborations between local and international firms, such as Sembcorp and Nama Power are crucial in achieving global clean energy targets.

Oman continues to attract major investments in the renewable sector. The government is reviewing bids for additional solar projects, including a 500 MW facility. The countryโ€™s focus on clean energy will drive further developments in the coming years.

Sembcorpโ€™s success with Manah II showcases its ability to deliver large-scale renewable projects efficiently. The company is well-positioned to expand its footprint in the region. With ongoing investments in sustainable energy, Oman is on track to meet its ambitious renewable energy goals.

The launch of the Manah II solar project represents a major milestone in Omanโ€™s clean energy journey. As the country moves towards a greener future, such projects will play a vital role in shaping its energy landscape.
