In a significant strategic pivot, the Republic of Moldova is laying the groundwork to transition from an energy-dependent nation to a net exporter of green electricity, with an ambitious target set for 2026. This move signals a profound shift in the country’s energy policy, driven by a dual focus on national security and closer integration with the European Union. While the goal is aspirational, recent progress in renewable energy generation, critical infrastructure development, and market reforms suggests a determined push toward this new reality.
Expanding Renewable Generation Capacity for Moldova green electricity
At the heart of Moldova’s export ambition is a rapid expansion of its domestic renewable energy capacity. The government is actively leveraging its wind potential through a series of auctions designed to attract investment and scale up production. Following an initial auction for 165 MW of wind power, a second auction is underway for an additional 170 MW, which notably includes requirements for energy storage solutions.
This latest initiative alone is projected to increase the share of renewable energy in the national mix by 5.8%. When combined with the first auction, these wind projects are set to contribute approximately 11.4% to Moldova’s energy supply, marking a substantial step towards the national target of achieving 30% renewables by 2030. According to Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu, these developments mean Moldova could, for the first time, become an exporter of electricity produced locally from renewable sources.
Building the Infrastructure for Independence and Trade in Moldova green electricity
Producing green energy is only half the battle; delivering it reliably and enabling cross-border trade requires robust infrastructure. Recognizing this, Moldova has made significant strides in strengthening its connection to the European energy grid.
In the summer of 2025, four new 110kV power lines were commissioned, creating vital interconnections with Romania. These lines—Stanca–Costesti, Tutora–Ungheni, Husi–Cioara, and Falciu–Cantemir—have already enhanced grid stability and resolved previous risks of major blackouts.
Furthermore, three additional major transmission lines are currently under construction. Once complete, this expanded network will not only secure Moldova’s full energy independence but also provide the physical pathways necessary to export surplus electricity to its European neighbors.
Market Reforms Pave the Way for Moldova green electricity
Complementing the physical infrastructure is the development of a modern, liberalized energy market. In December 2025, Moldova achieved a key milestone with the first transactions on its Day-Ahead and Intraday markets. These platforms are essential for transparent price discovery and efficient electricity trading, forming the commercial backbone required for an export-oriented energy sector. This move towards market liberalization is further evidenced by the shift of 180 large consumers to the free gas market, effective April 1, 2026.

While no confirmed agreements for green electricity exports are yet in place for 2026, the combination of increased renewable generation, crucial grid interconnections, and functional market mechanisms creates a clear and credible path forward.
