In a significant move to tackle the energy deficit in Cameroon, where only 20% of the rural population has access to electricity, MTN Cameroon has entered into a strategic partnership with the country’s Rural Electrification Agency (AER). The agreement, formalized in YaoundĂ© on June 2, aims to accelerate the deployment of solar power, directly addressing both connectivity and energy challenges in underserved regions.
Powering Connectivity with Clean Energy
The collaboration, signed by MTN Cameroon CEO Stephen Blewett and AER General Manager Moussa Ousmanou, will primarily focus on supplying solar energy to power MTN’s own rural network infrastructure. This includes critical assets like relay stations, ensuring more reliable mobile and data services for communities far from the national grid. Pilot projects for this initiative are already underway in the West and Littoral regions, demonstrating a tangible commitment to enhancing rural connectivity through sustainable means.
A Catalyst for National Electrification Goals
While MTN’s project directly supports its network operations, it operates in concert with the Cameroon government’s broader solar electrification program. The government’s ambitious plan, managed by AER and the Ministry of Water Resources and Energy, aims to deliver electricity to 1,000 communities using solar photovoltaic plants. These national efforts are backed by significant investment, including a loan exceeding $64.6 million from Afreximbank to fund solar systems across 200 rural areas, underscoring the scale of the country’s commitment to renewable energy.
Synergy Between Corporate and National Interests
This public-private partnership exemplifies a powerful synergy where corporate sustainability goals align with national development priorities. By transitioning its rural infrastructure to solar, MTN not only secures its energy supply and reduces operational costs but also contributes to Cameroon’s renewable energy targets. This approach reflects a growing trend where telecom operators become key players in sustainable development, a model that has shown success in other African nations like South Sudan, where solar is transforming rural life and economic prospects.
Building a Sustainable Energy Future
The MTN-AER agreement is a key component in Cameroon’s larger strategy to build a resilient and sustainable energy future. It complements other large-scale renewable projects, such as the Scatec solar capacity expansion, which are collectively transforming the nation’s energy mix. By championing clean energy, these collaborations help reduce dependence on fossil fuels and set a precedent for future private-sector involvement in achieving critical infrastructure and environmental goals, consistent with MTN Group’s wider ESG commitments.
