Neoen Begins Construction of Three Solar Farms in France
Neoen, a leading renewable energy producer, has officially commenced construction on three new solar farms in France. This significant development will add a combined capacity of 230 MWp to the nation’s grid, with all three projects slated to become operational by 2028. This move underscores Neoen’s commitment to expanding its renewable energy portfolio and supporting France’s energy transition goals.
The projects were awarded in 2024 through a competitive tender process managed by France’s energy regulation commission, the Commission de régulation de l’énergie (CRE).
A Diverse Portfolio of Neoen solar farms France
The three new sites showcase a range of innovative solar technologies and land-use strategies, from agrisolar to floating installations.
- Le Couret Agrisolar Project: Located in the Haute-Vienne department near Lussac-les-Eglises and Saint-Martin-le-Mault, this is the largest of the three projects with a capacity of 147 MWp. Spanning 170 hectares, the project is a collaboration with local authorities and the chamber of agriculture. As an agrisolar initiative, it integrates solar power generation with agricultural activities and includes plans for upgrading local agricultural buildings.
- Isle-sur-Marne Solar Farm: This 48 MWp solar farm is situated in the La Marne department. The project is being developed on land managed by the Perthois-Bocage and Der federation of municipalities, demonstrating a strong partnership with local governance.
- Matignicourt Floating Solar Farm: Also located in the La Marne department on land managed by the same federation, this project will have a capacity of 35 MWp. By utilizing a water body for installation, this floating solar farm represents an efficient use of space and resources.
Strategic Partnerships and Power Agreements
To bring these ambitious projects to life, Neoen has established key partnerships. Equans Solar & Storage is responsible for the construction of the farms and two crucial 225 kV substations that will connect the facilities to France’s national electricity grid.
While Neoen will retain full ownership and operational control of the farms upon completion, Equans will continue to play a role by providing maintenance services for the first 20 years of operation.
The electricity generated by all three solar farms will be sold to SNCF Energie, the energy division of France’s national state-owned railway company. The deal is secured through a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) that was signed in June 2024, ensuring a stable, long-term supply of clean energy to one of the country’s most vital transportation networks.
