April 2025 Sees Surge in North Macedonia Renewable Energy
North Macedonia saw a remarkable rise in renewable energy production in April 2025, a 20.8% increase compared to the previous year. According to the State Statistical Office, total renewable energy output for the month reached an impressive 119,821 MWh.
Driving this surge was a 26.3% increase in electricity from hydropower plants and a 5.4% rise in wind power. Solar power generation also saw a substantial boost of 21.7%. These gains were partially offset by a 15.3% decline in electricity from biogas plants.
Hydropower and Solar Dominate North Macedonia Renewable Energy Growth
Hydropower remained the leading renewable energy source in North Macedonia, producing 97,683 MWh in April 2025. This output accounted for nearly 82% of the country’s total renewable energy and represented a significant year-over-year increase, despite a modest 1% dip from the previous month.
Solar power also made considerable strides, producing 8,062 MWh. This figure represents a 1.6% increase from the previous month and a 21.7% jump from April 2024, underscoring a steady upward trend for solar.
Wind and Biogas Trends in North Macedonia Renewable Energy Sector
Wind power generation climbed 5.4% compared to April 2024, totaling 11,636 MWh. However, this figure represented a 4.8% decrease from March 2025, a reflection of wind energy’s month-to-month variability.
Electricity from biogas plants, meanwhile, declined by 15.3% year-over-year, totaling 2,440 MWh. This output was also down 6% from the previous month, pointing to a consistent downward trend.
North Macedonia Renewable Energy Impact on Total Electricity Output
This growth in renewable energy is part of North Macedonia’s broader strategy to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and transition to a more sustainable energy mix. The report also noted a parallel decline in electricity from fossil fuels, including thermal and combined heat and power (CHP) plants.
Production from thermal power plants fell by 21.7% compared to April 2024, totaling 79,472 MWh. CHP plants experienced an even steeper decline of 37.8%, with production dropping to 22,808 MWh.
North Macedonia Renewable Energy Share in the National Energy Mix
Despite the drop in fossil fuel generation, North Macedonia’s overall electricity production was still dominated by non-renewable sources, which accounted for 63.4% of the total energy mix. Renewables contributed the remaining 36.6%.
