Oman renewable energy growth: Impressive 21% Share in 2025

In early 2025, Oman’s renewable energy share doubled, reaching a new high, according to the latest data from the Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR). The country’s new renewable energy projects are successfully reducing its dependence on fossil fuels, aligning with global trends towards sustainable energy development. India, for example, recently secured \$1 billion for a solar power initiative in Afghanistan, demonstrating the growing regional focus on renewables (Source).

Oman Renewable Energy Growth: Share Jumps to 21%

The APSR’s report for the first quarter of 2025 shows that renewable energy now makes up 21% of total electricity generation in the Main Interconnected System (MIS) and the Dhofar Power System (DPS). This is a significant increase from the 9% recorded in the same period last year (Source). This impressive growth puts Oman on track to potentially exceed its previously stated renewable energy targets, as highlighted in articles discussing Oman’s ambition to achieve 11.5% renewable energy share by 2025 (Source).

This rise in renewable energy share comes amid concerns over excess natural gas supplies. Natural gas remains the primary fuel for power generation in Oman, but its share dropped from 88% in the first quarter of 2024 to 76% in the first quarter of this year. Diesel’s contribution also fell from 2% to 1%, further demonstrating the shift towards cleaner energy sources.

Oman Renewable Energy Growth Boosts Capacity

The APSR report highlights the significant growth in renewable energy generation, driven by new projects coming online. In the first quarter of 2025, renewable energy generation reached 1,255.98 gigawatt-hours (GWh), compared to 5,816.12 GWh from natural gas. This substantial increase in renewable generation demonstrates the effectiveness of Oman’s investments in clean energy infrastructure.

The success of renewable energy in Oman is due to several key projects. The Manah I and II Solar Power Plants, with a combined capacity of 1,000 megawatts (MW), contributed 561.08 GWh to the grid in the first quarter of 2025. Other major projects include the Ibri II Solar Power Plant, which generated 219.95 GWh, and the Amin and Al Mazyouna solar power plants, which together produced 66.89 GWh. These large-scale solar projects showcase Oman’s commitment to harnessing its abundant solar resources.

Wind energy also played a significant role in Oman’s renewable energy mix. The Dhofar Wind Power Plant, with a capacity of 50 MW, generated 42.04 GWh in the first quarter of 2025. Additionally, the Tanweer Wind Power Plant in Al Mazyouna produced 3.44 GWh. These wind projects contribute to a diversified renewable energy portfolio, leveraging both solar and wind resources.

Hydrogen and Future Prospects for Oman Renewable Energy Growth

Oman’s renewable energy strategy also includes hydrogen production. The Oman Hydrogen Centre, located at the German University of Technology in Muscat (GUtech), is playing a vital role in advancing hydrogen technology and research. This focus on hydrogen positions Oman at the forefront of the burgeoning global hydrogen economy.

With its abundant solar and wind resources, Oman is well-positioned to become a global leader in green hydrogen production. The country is investing in infrastructure to support hydrogen export, which could further boost its renewable energy sector and contribute to global decarbonization efforts. This forward-thinking approach highlights Oman’s commitment to a sustainable energy future.

Oman’s renewable energy growth demonstrates its commitment to sustainable development and reducing its reliance on fossil fuels. By continuing to invest in renewable energy projects and exploring new technologies like green hydrogen, Oman is paving the way for a greener and more sustainable future for itself and potentially contributing to global energy transition.
