North Oman Solar Plant Reaches 95% Completion
Oman’s push towards a sustainable energy future has reached a significant milestone. The North Oman Solar plant, a key project located at Saih Nahaydah, has achieved approximately 95% completion of its tracker and photovoltaic module installation. This development marks a major step forward in the nation’s renewable energy ambitions.
The project is a collaborative effort between OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) and TotalEnergies. According to OQAE, the final solar panels are on track to be installed by mid-March 2026, which will pave the way for the plant’s mechanical completion.
The Oman solar plant as a Cornerstone of a Larger Green Initiative
This solar facility is a critical component of a broader renewable energy strategy in the region. It is one of three major projects, alongside the Riyah 1 and Riyah 2 wind farms, designed to supply clean power to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO).
With a combined investment exceeding US$230 million, these three projects are expected to deliver a total of 330 MW of wind and solar power to Oman’s grid by the end of 2026. This initiative underscores a significant commitment to diversifying the country’s energy portfolio and reducing its carbon footprint.
Progress on Associated Wind Projects
While the solar plant nears completion, substantial progress is also being made on the associated wind farms. Key updates include:
- Turbine Installation: Seven wind turbines, each boasting an impressive 200-meter tip height, have been fully installed.
- Component Delivery: All 36 turbine generators required for the projects have been successfully delivered to Oman, with 19 already transported to the construction sites.
- Foundation Work: The foundations for all turbines are 100% complete, a crucial step that will accelerate the final commissioning phase.
Boosting the Local Economy with the Oman solar plant
Beyond their environmental benefits, these renewable energy projects are delivering significant economic value to Oman. The developments have already surpassed their in-country value (ICV) targets, with approximately 30% of the total expenditure being retained within the Omani economy. This has been achieved through strategic partnerships with local suppliers, including prominent companies like Voltamp and Oman Cables, fostering growth and expertise within the nation’s industrial sector.
