Petra Awards EPC Contract for 300MW Manah II Solar Project in Oman
Oman’s renewable energy landscape has taken another significant step forward with the announcement that Petra has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract for the 300-megawatt (MW) Manah II Solar Independent Power Project (IPP). This development marks a crucial milestone in the Sultanate’s journey towards a sustainable and diversified energy future.
Project Scope and Details for the Oman solar project
Located in the Ad Dakhiliyah governorate, approximately 150 km southwest of Muscat, the Manah II Solar Project is a key component of Oman’s strategy to harness its abundant solar resources. As the EPC contractor, Petra will assume turnkey responsibility for the project, overseeing every phase from detailed engineering and design to the procurement of all necessary equipment and materials, and finally, the complete construction and commissioning of the solar plant.
The 300 MW facility is being developed by a consortium led by global energy leaders. Upon completion, the plant will supply clean electricity to the national grid under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company (OPWP), the country’s sole off-taker of power and water.
A Cornerstone of Oman Vision 2040, the Oman solar project
The Manah II project is a powerful demonstration of Oman’s commitment to its national development strategy, Oman Vision 2040. A central pillar of this vision is the diversification of the economy away from hydrocarbon dependence and the promotion of sustainable energy sources. The government has set ambitious targets to increase the share of renewables in its energy mix, aiming for 20% by 2030 and up to 39% by 2040.
Large-scale solar projects like Manah II are essential to achieving these goals. By adding 300 MW of clean energy capacity, the plant will significantly reduce the country’s carbon emissions and decrease its reliance on natural gas for electricity generation, contributing to both environmental sustainability and long-term energy security.
The Significance of the EPC Award for the Oman solar project
The awarding of an EPC contract signifies that a project is moving from the planning and development stage into the tangible execution phase. Petra’s selection underscores the confidence placed in its expertise to deliver a complex, utility-scale solar project on schedule and to specification.
This project is part of a larger solar initiative in the Manah region, which includes the adjacent Manah I project, collectively representing one of the largest solar developments in Oman. Together, these plants will form a cornerstone of the nation’s renewable energy infrastructure, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable future for the Sultanate. The successful execution of Manah II will not only contribute vital megawatts to the grid but also serve as a model for future renewable energy endeavors in the region.
