Oviedo solar community: Unique Iberdrola Project Launches

Iberdrola is advancing its commitment to democratizing renewable energy with the launch of its first solar community in Oviedo, an initiative designed to supply locally-produced clean power to approximately 2,000 households and businesses. This project embodies a new model for urban energy generation, directly supporting the city’s sustainability objectives while significantly reducing the local carbon footprint.

Oviedo solar community: Unique Iberdrola Project Launches in Oviedo

The establishment of Oviedo’s inaugural solar community marks a pivotal moment for the region of Asturias, making it the sixth Spanish region to adopt Iberdrola’s innovative shared energy model. This initiative aligns with Iberdrola’s broader strategy, which includes a target of reaching 52 GW of installed renewable capacity by 2025 and supporting post-thermal plant transitions throughout Asturias. While this project focuses on local energy distribution, the company is also investing in the regional supply chain, such as its joint development of a solar panel factory in nearby Langreo.

This community-focused approach, already proven in cities like Madrid, Valencia, and Seville, is a direct outcome of a collaboration agreement with the Oviedo City Council signed in September 2023. The project demonstrates a tangible application of the city’s Climate Action and Energy Transition Plan, empowering citizens to become active participants in the shift toward a more sustainable energy system.

At the core of this initiative is a rooftop installation featuring 261 solar panels, collectively providing 120 kilowatts (kW) of power. Strategically located atop the Central Market, the array serves a diverse mix of commercial and residential users within a two-kilometer radius. This model effectively overcomes common barriers to solar adoption, such as high initial investment or lack of suitable roof space, which is especially beneficial for urban renters.

Beatriz Corredor, President of Iberdrola Spain, highlighted the project’s foundational goal: “We want to bring the benefits of self-consumption closer to all citizens, allowing them to save on their energy bills and contribute to the fight against climate change.” Participants can easily join and monitor their energy savings and consumption through the Iberdrola app, ensuring transparency and control over their energy usage.

Local Partnerships and Oviedo solar community: Unique Iberdrola Project Launches

The project’s launch was celebrated by key community leaders, including Oviedo’s Mayor, Alfredo Canteli, who hailed it as a prime example of the city’s dedication to innovation and sustainability. Francisco Rodríguez, President of the Central Market Association, also expressed strong support, emphasizing the positive impact on the market’s vendors and the surrounding neighborhood. This deep local engagement is critical, reflecting a global trend where community-level actions are driving significant progress in the renewable energy sector, much like how Argentina is forging a new path with investments in local production.

By bringing clean energy generation into the heart of the city, the Oviedo solar community serves as more than just an infrastructure project. It is a collaborative solution that reduces emissions, provides economic benefits, and builds a shared sense of environmental responsibility. As this model expands, it promises to accelerate the achievement of renewable energy goals across Spain.
