In a landmark move for Portugal’s renewable energy sector, mining company Boliden Somincor is spearheading the development of the nation’s largest solar plant for self-consumption. This ambitious project, undertaken in partnership with energy giants EDP Comercial and Greenvolt Next, signals a major commitment to sustainable industrial practices and energy independence.

The new photovoltaic facility will be located at the Neves-Corvo mine in Castro Verde, a region known for its rich mineral resources. Spanning approximately 55 hectares within the mining concession, the plant is set to become a powerhouse of clean energy.
With a planned capacity of 49 MWp, the solar installation is projected to generate nearly 100 GWh of electricity annually. This output is substantial enough to cover around 33% of Boliden Somincor’s total energy consumption at the mine. The environmental impact is equally impressive, with an expected reduction of more than 41,000 tonnes of COâ‚‚ emissions each year.
