Portugal self-consumption solar: Stunning 24MW Plant Built

Portugal’s Boliden Somincor Building Largest Self-Consumption Solar Plant

In a landmark move for Portugal’s renewable energy sector, mining company Boliden Somincor is spearheading the development of the nation’s largest solar plant for self-consumption. This ambitious project, undertaken in partnership with energy giants EDP Comercial and Greenvolt Next, signals a major commitment to sustainable industrial practices and energy independence.

A Milestone in Industrial Decarbonization with Portugal self-consumption solar

The new photovoltaic facility will be located at the Neves-Corvo mine in Castro Verde, a region known for its rich mineral resources. Spanning approximately 55 hectares within the mining concession, the plant is set to become a powerhouse of clean energy.

With a planned capacity of 49 MWp, the solar installation is projected to generate nearly 100 GWh of electricity annually. This output is substantial enough to cover around 33% of Boliden Somincor’s total energy consumption at the mine. The environmental impact is equally impressive, with an expected reduction of more than 41,000 tonnes of COâ‚‚ emissions each year. This initiative not only advances the company’s decarbonization goals but also enhances its resilience against the volatility of the energy market.

Collaborative Effort and Local Impact of Portugal self-consumption solar

The construction and management of this large-scale project are a collaborative effort. EDP and Greenvolt are tasked with the building and operation of the plant for at least 12 years. Their responsibilities include supplying all necessary equipment and managing essential upgrades to the substation infrastructure.

The project is also a significant boon for the local economy in the Baixo Alentejo region. The construction phase is expected to create around 200 jobs, providing valuable employment opportunities for the local community.

Project Timeline and Future Outlook for Portugal self-consumption solar

This pioneering solar plant represents a turning point in Boliden Somincor’s sustainability strategy. The project is on track to be fully operational in the second half of 2026. Once online, it will stand as a powerful example of how heavy industry can integrate large-scale renewable energy solutions to power its operations, setting a new standard for sustainable mining in Portugal and beyond.
