The Punjab government has announced a significant program to distribute 50 tractors to farmers, signaling a dedicated push towards organic farming and sustainable agricultural practices. The distribution of these tractors falls under the state’s “Promotion of Organic Farming” project. This comprehensive project aims to equip and encourage farmers to transition to organic methods. The goal is to build a resilient agricultural model that ensures long-term productivity while actively conserving the environment, a crucial step for a state that was at the heart of the Green Revolution and now faces challenges like soil degradation and water table depletion.
Minister Khudian emphasized that the program is structured to benefit approximately 1,000 farmers across ten districts. The initiative deliberately targets small and marginal farmers, alongside women and young farmers, to ensure that the support reaches the most vulnerable sections of the farming community and fosters inclusivity.
The 50 tractors will be allocated evenly, with five tractors designated for each of the 10 selected districts: Patiala, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Barnala, Malerkotla, Tarn Taran, Moga, Bathinda, and Sri Muktsar Sahib. By concentrating efforts in these areas, the government hopes to cultivate hubs of organic farming that can serve as successful models and learning centers for other regions.

Furthermore, the government is actively promoting the production of vermicompost—a powerful, nutrient-rich organic fertilizer created by earthworms.
