Renewable Energy ECOWAS Meeting in Dakar Aims for 2030 Goals

ECOWAS Parliament Meeting on Renewable Energy in Dakar

The ECOWAS Parliament is convening a five-day Delocalized Joint Committee Meeting in Dakar, Senegal, starting today, June 15, and running through June 19, 2026. The primary focus of the meeting is to advance renewable energy deployment and accelerate rural electrification across West Africa.

Meeting Theme and Participants

The theme of the meeting is “Harnessing Renewable Energy for Rural Electrification and Empowerment of Rural Economies in the ECOWAS Region: The Role of the ECOWAS Parliament.” The event is jointly organized by the Parliament’s Committees on Energy and Mines, Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources, and Infrastructure under the Sixth Legislature. Participants include Members of Parliament, ECOWAS institutions, government representatives, development partners, private sector stakeholders, civil society organizations, and energy experts.

Discussion Points

Delegates will examine how decentralized energy solutions, such as solar mini-grids and hybrid energy systems, can effectively bridge the electricity access gap in underserved rural communities. Discussions will also focus on unlocking West Africa’s abundant solar and hydropower resources and identifying practical measures to attract investment in sustainable energy infrastructure. Key regional frameworks, including the ECOWAS Renewable Energy Policy (EREP) and the updated ECOWAS Energy Policy, will be reviewed during the discussions.
