Romania’s Hidroelectrica Advances with 8.9 MW Romania solar park Contract
In a significant step towards diversifying its energy portfolio, Romania’s state-owned hydropower giant, Hidroelectrica, has awarded a major contract for the construction of a new solar park. A consortium led by Electro Alfa International has secured the RON 24.4 million (approximately EUR 4.8 million) deal to build the 8.9 MWp “Țara Hațegului Photovoltaic Park.”
This move underscores Hidroelectrica’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the renewable energy sector beyond its traditional hydropower base.
Project Scope and Timeline for the Romania solar park
The contract, signed on February 19, 2026, is for a turnkey project. This means the consortium, which also includes General Me.El Electric, will be responsible for the entire project lifecycle. This includes all design activities, equipment supply, construction, testing, commissioning, and providing technical assistance throughout the warranty period.
The project is set on an ambitious timeline, with a total duration of just 12 months. This is broken down into a two-month design phase followed by a ten-month period for execution and construction.
Once operational, the Țara Hațegului Photovoltaic Park is projected to have an average annual production of around 11 GWh, contributing a substantial amount of clean energy to the national grid.
A Strategic Green Energy Investment: The Romania solar park
The contract was awarded following an open tender procedure that attracted four competitive bids, with the Electro Alfa-led consortium emerging as the winner.
For Hidroelectrica, Romania’s largest electricity producer, this investment is a key part of its broader development strategy. Bogdan Badea, CEO of Hidroelectrica, described the project as “a new important moment in our development strategy.” He emphasized the company’s firm commitment to diversifying its energy mix by investing in modern, green energy production capacities.
This new solar park is not just about adding megawatts to the company’s portfolio. It directly supports national and European energy transition goals by increasing Romania’s renewable energy capacity and helping to reduce carbon emissions. By branching further into solar power, Hidroelectrica is solidifying its role as a pivotal player in the nation’s sustainable energy future.
