The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a US$57.4 million financing package to promote rooftop solar energy solutions in Sri Lanka. This package aims to enhance clean energy access while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Financial Breakdown of Rooftop Solar Sri Lanka
Of the total financing, US$35 million will be provided as concessional loans from ADB, while US$22.44 million will come from grants allocated by the European Union and Japan.
Project Features of Rooftop Solar Sri Lanka
The initiative will support the aggregation of rooftop solar systems and modernization of the existing electricity grid. Additionally, it will introduce Sri Lanka’s first virtual net metering system, which allows solar energy generated at one location to offset electricity consumption at another. This feature is intended to benefit households and businesses unable to install solar panels directly.
Goals and Impact of Rooftop Solar Sri Lanka
The rooftop solar expansion is part of Sri Lanka’s broader strategy to decrease its dependency on fossil fuels for electricity generation. These efforts are in line with the country’s goals to improve renewable energy uptake and promote sustainable energy practices across the economy.
