Rwanda’s commitment to renewable energy and modern cooking solutions has received a significant endorsement, highlighted by a €10,000 grant from the Energy and Environment Partnership Trust Fund (EEP Africa). This funding is directed towards AEST-TASS to support the validation and promotion of solar drying technologies for agricultural products, marking a key investment in the nation’s sustainable development goals.
Modernizing Institutional Kitchens
This boost in solar technology funding aligns with a broader national movement to modernize institutional kitchens, particularly within schools. A prominent example is MTN Rwanda’s investment of RWF 30,000,000 (approximately €21,000) to construct a state-of-the-art kitchen at the GS Bukure school. This initiative is part of the “Dusangire Lunch” program, which aims to support 10,000 students. Such projects are pivotal in transitioning away from traditional cooking methods, improving health outcomes, and creating more efficient learning environments for students across the country.
A Multi-Faceted Approach to Clean Energy in Rwanda
The push for sustainable energy in Rwanda extends beyond single projects. It encompasses a wide range of technologies and initiatives aimed at both institutional and household levels. Research into the viability of electric pressure cookers in Kigali, for instance, demonstrates a focus on providing affordable and efficient clean cooking options for urban populations. Simultaneously, organizations like Solar Cooking KoZon are actively contributing to the adoption of solar cooking technologies within Rwandan communities.

These targeted efforts are bolstered by Rwanda’s comprehensive national strategy to improve its energy infrastructure. The country is actively working to expand its electrical grid, with recent initiatives including the procurement of 290 transformers and securing significant financing to connect hundreds of thousands of households to electricity. This foundational work is crucial for supporting the widespread adoption of modern electric and solar-powered cooking appliances, turning targeted grants and corporate investments into scalable, nationwide progress.
