Sackville arena solar power: $1.3M investment is stunning

The Sackville Community Arena, a vital hub in Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, is poised for a major renewable energy transformation following a $1.3 million federal investment. This funding will equip the beloved community facility with a solar panel array and a battery storage system, a strategic move to slash both its carbon footprint and significant operational overhead.

For years, the volunteer-led Lake District Recreation Association (LDRA), which operates the arena, has grappled with substantial expenses, including electricity bills nearing $14,000 per month. The new green infrastructure promises immediate financial relief. Allan Smith, President of the LDRA, emphasized this benefit, stating, “This project funding allows Lake District Recreation Association to reap an immediate benefit by reducing electric costs.” He added that the investment elevates the facility’s status, noting it “positions the arena as one of the most efficient buildings of its kind in Nova Scotia and perhaps all of Canada.”

The project centers on the installation of a solar photovoltaic array coupled with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). This integrated system will allow the arena to generate its own clean electricity during sunny days and store the surplus power. The stored energy can then be deployed during peak demand, overnight, or, critically, as a reliable backup power source during grid outages, ensuring community activities like hockey and lacrosse can proceed without interruption.

The investment was lauded as a dual victory for community and climate. MP Braedon Clark highlighted the federal government’s commitment to such local cornerstones. “Facilities like the Sackville Community Arena are the heart and soul of our communities,” Clark said. “The federal government is proud to support the Lake District Recreation Association in their efforts to reduce both greenhouse gas emissions and their operational costs.” By converting a significant operational expense into a sustainable asset, this project secures a more resilient and cost-effective future for a cherished community gathering place.
