New Era for Senegal: Investing in Senegal solar power
Senegal has taken another significant stride in its renewable energy journey with the inauguration of a new solar power plant in Diass. The opening ceremony, held at the end of January 2026, was marked by the presence of Senegalese President Macky Sall and former German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, highlighting the strong international partnership behind this green initiative. This development signals a clear commitment from Senegal to harness its abundant solar resources and transition towards a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
A Landmark Project for Senegal’s Energy Transition
Located approximately 40 kilometers southeast of the capital, Dakar, the Diass solar plant is strategically positioned to supply power to a key economic region. The project is a cornerstone of Senegal’s broader energy transition strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewables in its national energy mix. By investing in solar power, the nation is working to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, enhance energy security, and contribute to global climate goals.
The Broader Context: Germany and the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP)
The German support for this project extends beyond a symbolic presence. The inauguration of the solar plant coincides with another crucial development in the same location under the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP). The first investment from this multi-billion-euro program in Senegal is now taking shape in Diass with the commencement of a new battery storage facility.
This complementary project is vital for the success of renewable energy integration. While the solar plant generates electricity during the day, the battery storage facility will ensure that this energy can be stored and dispatched when needed, providing a stable and reliable power supply to the grid even after the sun sets. The foundation for this facility was laid with the participation of the Senegalese government and German State Secretary Kofler, further cementing Diass’s role as a central hub for Senegal’s green ambitions.
The JETP framework, supported by a coalition of international partners including Germany, is designed to help emerging economies move away from fossil fuels without compromising economic development. The dual projects in Diass—the solar power plant and the battery storage system—perfectly embody the partnership’s goal of fostering a holistic and sustainable energy ecosystem.
This new solar plant is more than just an infrastructure project; it is a symbol of progress and international cooperation, powering Senegal’s bright and sustainable future.
