Pharmaceutical company Hemofarm has officially commissioned a 4 MW rooftop solar power plant at its production complex in Vršac, marking a significant step forward in corporate renewable energy adoption in Serbia. The new facility stands as one of the largest rooftop photovoltaic systems in the country, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainability and decarbonization.

A Strategic Investment in Serbia rooftop solar

The project, representing a EUR 3 million investment, is a cornerstone of Hemofarm’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and stabilize energy costs. The installation features approximately 8,000 solar panels spanning 21,000 square meters across the roofs of 15 separate buildings within the complex.

This extensive solar array is expected to generate an impressive 5 million kWh of clean electricity annually. According to the company, this output will cover about 12% of the site’s average electricity consumption. During the sun-drenched summer months, the plant’s contribution is projected to rise significantly, potentially meeting up to 50% of the facility’s power needs.

Vladan Stanojević, the Vršac site manager, highlighted that the project goes beyond simple energy generation. It includes crucial structural reinforcements to the building roofs and incorporates an advanced monitoring system to optimize self-consumption. This move not only supports Hemofarm’s environmental goals but also provides a buffer against volatile energy market prices.

Context in Serbia’s Growing Solar Landscape

Hemofarm’s new solar plant is a major addition to Serbia’s renewable energy capacity. While it is one of the largest rooftop installations, it joins other significant corporate projects in the nation. For context, the country’s largest rooftop PV systems include a 9 MW plant operated by polymer products manufacturer Peštan and a 6 MW facility at the chemical company Henkel.

The successful commissioning of the Hemofarm plant demonstrates a growing trend among Serbian industrial players to invest in on-site power generation. This shift towards self-consumption is pivotal for achieving national energy transition goals and showcases the increasing economic and environmental viability of large-scale solar power.
