WestProp Holdings has installed and commissioned a 1-megawatt solar plant at its Millennium Heights residential estate in Harare’s Borrowdale West suburb, Zimbabwe. The installation converts the development’s 54-bay car park into a canopy of solar panels that generates renewable energy for the apartments while providing shade for residents’ vehicles.
The solar facility is part of WestProp’s stated strategy to take all of its developments entirely off Zimbabwe’s national electricity grid. Solar power now runs the estate’s security systems, common area lighting, and residential apartment supply, bypassing the load-shedding and grid instability that has been a persistent challenge in Harare. CEO Ken Sharpe said the car park installation demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship, adding that sustainability is embedded across all WestProp projects.
Additional parking bays on upcoming apartment blocks within the estate will receive the same solar covering, expanding generating capacity as each phase of the 1,000-unit Millennium Heights development is completed. The estate forms part of the larger Millennium City project, which WestProp describes as Zimbabwe’s first purpose-built smart urban ecosystem.
The project reflects a growing trend in Zimbabwe toward renewable energy solutions in urban development, as property developers increasingly turn to solar power to enhance reliability amid ongoing electricity supply challenges.
