In a key step towards its commissioning, the Minister of Energy and Dams, Agok Makur Kur, recently led a delegation to inspect the facility located near the capital, Juba. The visit, which took place around mid-February 2026, aimed to assess the project’s progress and technical readiness ahead of its scheduled launch in June 2026.
Joined by ministry undersecretary Macham Macham and a team of technical staff, the minister’s inspection focused on construction progress, operational planning, and the overall readiness of the plant. Officials expressed confidence that the project is on track to meet its June deadline, heralding a new era for power generation in the region.
Powering a Brighter Future for Juba with the South Sudan solar project
The Nesitu solar plant is a landmark government-backed initiative designed to tackle the nation’s severe energy challenges. Once operational, the facility is set to generate 20 megawatts (MW) of clean solar power, supported by a substantial 35 MW battery storage system. This storage capacity is crucial for ensuring a stable and reliable power supply, even when the sun isn’t shining.
Construction on the ambitious project began in 2019, with Egyptian contractor Elsuadi implementing the build, and Trinity Company slated to manage its operations. The plant is poised to supply electricity to households, businesses, and institutions in and around Juba, a city that has long contended with an unreliable power grid.
