Suriname photovoltaic project Success: 10,000 Solar Panels Delivered

With the delivery of 10,000 solar panels, the first phase of Suriname’s photovoltaic project is now complete, thanks to a $50 million grant from the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Suriname Photovoltaic Project to Benefit Interior Communities

The project, which will ultimately include 100,000 solar panels, is set to benefit 300 interior communities in Suriname. This first shipment of 10,000 panels was received at the port of Paramaribo and features advanced batteries capable of sustaining power for three days—a significant advantage for remote areas with limited access to reliable energy sources.

UAE’s Support for Suriname’s Renewable Energy Transition

The UAE has been supporting Suriname’s energy transition since 2022, with a focus on renewable energy projects. The partnership was solidified during a meeting between Surinamese President Chandrikapersad Santokhi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, which highlighted a shared commitment to sustainable development through international cooperation.

In June 2023, the UAE allocated $50 million to Suriname for renewable energy projects through its Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD), a government agency that provides grants and loans to developing countries for economic development. This funding is aimed at helping Suriname transition from fossil fuels and improve its energy infrastructure, reflecting the UAE’s broader commitment to promoting renewable energy worldwide.

Key Benefits of the Suriname Photovoltaic Project

The project is expected to improve energy access for rural communities, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create jobs in the renewable energy sector. These outcomes align with the Surinamese government’s green energy policy and global goals for sustainable development. Reinforcing this commitment, President Santokhi signed the Abu Dhabi Declaration, which emphasizes the importance of global cooperation in the energy transition.

Global Collaboration Driving the Suriname Photovoltaic Project

The collaboration between Suriname and the UAE highlights the importance of international partnerships in addressing climate change and demonstrates how countries working together can achieve greater progress toward a sustainable future. The delivery of the first 10,000 solar panels marks a significant step in Suriname’s journey toward a greener and more sustainable energy future.
