A Strategic Vision: Switzerland battery deployment: Unique 2MW Project Impresses
A new strategic alliance between U.S. battery innovator Inlyte Energy and Swiss data center operator NTS Colocation AG is set to introduce a novel energy storage solution to Switzerland. The partnership aims to deploy up to 2MW of Inlyte’s groundbreaking iron-sodium battery energy storage systems (BESS) across NTS’s facilities by the year 2028, directly addressing the escalating energy demands and grid pressures of the rapidly growing data center sector.
Bern Pilot to Validate Technology
The initiative will kick off with a crucial 600kWh pilot project at NTS’s state-of-the-art data center in Bern. This initial installation, slated for commissioning by the end of 2026, will function as a real-world validation of the technology. Its primary purpose is to confirm the technical capabilities of the iron-sodium batteries and ensure their seamless integration with the data center’s complex electrical and control infrastructure. For NTS, which already operates its Tier IV-certified facilities on 100% renewable energy and employs waste heat recovery, this project reinforces its commitment to sustainable and resilient operations.
The Iron-Sodium Advantage
Inlyte’s iron-sodium battery chemistry was specifically selected for its compelling advantages in critical infrastructure environments. The technology offers a unique combination of benefits perfectly suited for data center applications:
- Inherent Safety: The non-flammable nature of the battery chemistry is a critical feature, mitigating fire risk within high-value data facilities.
- Sustainable Sourcing: Constructed from earth-abundant materials like iron and sodium, the batteries present a more environmentally responsible alternative to those reliant on limited resources.
- Extended Duration: Capable of providing power for over 24 hours, these systems transcend the role of a simple uninterruptible power supply (UPS). They can perform valuable functions such as peak shaving and load leveling, while also offering stability services to the broader energy grid.
A Roadmap for Sustainable Growth
Following a successful pilot phase in Bern, Inlyte and NTS plan a wider deployment of the BESS technology. The expansion strategy includes outfitting other NTS locations and incorporating the system into a new data center planned for the Bern area in 2028. This phased rollout is key to achieving the partnership’s 2MW capacity goal. This collaboration marks a significant step forward, establishing a new benchmark for how data centers can enhance operational resilience while responsibly managing their energy consumption and supporting grid stability.
