Inlyte and NTS Partner for Switzerland battery deployment of 2MW
In a significant move to bolster energy resilience and sustainability within the data center industry, US-based battery manufacturer Inlyte Energy has announced a strategic partnership with Swiss data center operator NTS Colocation AG. The collaboration aims to deploy up to 2MW of innovative iron-sodium battery energy storage systems (BESS) across NTS facilities in Switzerland by 2028.
This partnership addresses the critical and growing demand for reliable, long-duration energy storage as data centers expand their capacity and face increasing pressure on local power grids.
The Pilot Project: A Proving Ground for Switzerland battery deployment in Bern
The collaboration will commence with a 600kWh pilot installation at NTS’s state-of-the-art data center in Bern. Scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2026, this initial phase will serve as a crucial testbed. The primary goal is to validate the technical performance of Inlyte’s iron-sodium battery technology and ensure seamless integration with NTS’s existing electrical and control systems within a live, operational environment.
NTS Colocation, known for its Tier IV-certified, carrier-neutral data centers in Zurich and Bern, operates on 100% renewable energy and utilizes waste heat recovery systems. This pilot project is a natural extension of its commitment to pioneering sustainable and resilient infrastructure.
Why Iron-Sodium Technology for Switzerland battery deployment?
The choice of Inlyte’s iron-sodium battery chemistry is a deliberate one, offering distinct advantages for critical applications like data centers.
- Enhanced Safety: The technology is inherently fire-safe, a paramount concern when deploying large-scale energy storage within sensitive data center facilities.
- Sustainability: Built from abundant and readily available materials like iron and sodium, these batteries provide a more sustainable alternative to chemistries that rely on scarcer resources.
- Long-Duration Storage: Inlyte’s systems are capable of providing long-duration storage for over 24 hours. This extends their function beyond simple uninterruptible power supply (UPS) capabilities, enabling applications like peak shaving, load leveling, and providing grid stability services.
Powering the Future with Switzerland battery deployment
The successful validation of the pilot project will pave the way for a broader rollout of Inlyte’s BESS technology. The roadmap includes deployment at other NTS facilities, notably a new data center planned for the Bern region in 2028, helping the partnership reach its 2MW goal.
This forward-thinking initiative by Inlyte and NTS Colocation represents a vital step in future-proofing data center operations. By integrating safe, sustainable, and long-duration energy storage, NTS is not only enhancing its operational resilience but also setting a new standard for how the industry can grow responsibly and manage its energy footprint effectively.
