Axpo Agrivoltaic Project Suhr Details
Axpo has begun construction of a 600 kWp agrivoltaic research facility in Suhr, Aargau, aimed at combining crop production with solar-power generation on the same farmland. This project, initiated in October 2026, is developed in collaboration with the Canton of Aargau and the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) as part of the canton’s AgriSolar Forschung programme.
Agrivoltaic Project Suhr Specifications
The trial area covers 2.79 hectares, with solar modules installed across approximately 1.2 hectares. The solar panels will be positioned about three metres above the fields and will utilize a tracking system to adjust their orientation seasonally. The land will remain agriculturally productive while researchers at FiBL study the impacts on crop yields, water management, biodiversity, drought resilience, and public acceptance. An adjacent field without panels will serve as a reference area.
Utility of Generated Energy from Agrivoltaic Project Suhr
All electricity generated by the facility will be supplied directly to the nearby Emmi dairy-processing site in Suhr for on-site consumption. Axpo will both build and operate the facility, while the existing farmer will continue to cultivate the land.
Research Objectives of the Agrivoltaic Project Suhr
This facility is the second of three planned agrivoltaic pilot plants in Aargau, following the first, which is located above an orchard at FiBL’s site in Frick. The aim is to further develop agrivoltaics as a viable agricultural and energy production model.
