Exploring the Tacna solar energy project: Unique 20MW Plan Approved
In the landscape of Peruvian renewable energy, the Tacna region stands out with its significant solar power infrastructure. A cornerstone of this capacity is the Central Tacna Solar Plant, a 20 MW photovoltaic facility that has been a key contributor to the national grid for over a decade. Contrary to reports of a newly approved plan, this established project, operated by Tacna Solar S.A.C., has been fully operational since October 31, 2012.
The facility represents a significant engineering achievement and a long-standing commitment to clean energy in the region. It is composed of 74,988 individual modules mounted on 182 solar trackers, designed to maximize energy capture throughout the day. This setup enables the plant to generate approximately 47,196 MWh annually, showcasing a plant factor of 26.9% and feeding electricity directly into Peru’s national interconnected system.
Under Peruvian energy policy, solar projects with a capacity of up to 20 MW are classified as Non-Conventional Renewable Energy (NCRE) sources, a framework established by Legislative Decree N°1002. This classification has been instrumental in promoting the development of solar, wind, and other green technologies across the country. The Central Tacna Solar Plant serves as a prime example of the successful implementation of this policy, highlighting how strategic investments can diversify the nation’s energy matrix and contribute to long-term sustainability goals. While Peru continues to explore new avenues for renewable growth, including green hydrogen and further solar expansion, the Tacna plant remains a benchmark for utility-scale solar generation in the country.
