WASCO Launches Solar-Powered Water Treatment Facility

The Water and Sewerage Company Inc. (WASCO) is excited to announce the launch of a cutting-edge solar-powered water treatment facility in Des Barras, Babonneau.

Saint Lucia Secures EU Climate Resilience Funding

The Government of Saint Lucia, in collaboration with WASCO, has secured financing from the European Union (EU) through the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the OECS Commission. This funding will support the nation’s climate readiness and resilience initiatives.

The newly upgraded plant features a compact, solar-powered water treatment module and underscores WASCO’s commitment to improving water infrastructure across the island, especially in rural areas vulnerable to climate change.

The facility is designed to improve the treatment process and storage capacity at Des Barras, minimizing water supply interruptions caused by heavy rains, high turbidity, and drought conditions.

WASCO Commits to Sustainability and Clean Water

Adopting renewable energy and advanced technologies allows WASCO to deliver clean, reliable water for all, while also reducing operating costs and lowering its carbon footprint.

At the official handover ceremony, WASCO CEO Zilta George-Leslie emphasized the company’s commitment to providing safe, reliable water and tackling the impacts of climate change.

“This upgraded plant, powered by renewable energy, will provide clean drinking water to over 300 residents of Des Barras. It not only improves water security but also aligns with Saint Lucia’s climate resilience goals,” said George-Leslie.

WASCO Takes Over Facility, Leading Caribbean Sustainability

Attended by officials from the Government of Saint Lucia, the EU, CCCCC, and the OECS Commission, the ceremony marked the official transfer of the water treatment facility’s management to WASCO.

This solar-powered water treatment plant sets a precedent for future projects across the island and the Caribbean, supporting the nation’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
