ChillMine and the Development of Zimbabwe solar data centers
ChillMine, a Zimbabwean data center company, has partnered with AAAS Energy, a renewable energy firm, to develop solar-powered data centers in Zimbabwe. While confirmed projects are primarily focused in Botswana, including a major data center campus in Palapye powered by solar and battery energy storage systems (BESS), the partnership aims to create a more sustainable and reliable energy source for Zimbabwe’s growing data center industry. In April 2025, ChillMine also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Zimbabwean independent power producer Energywise to develop solar-powered data centers across Zimbabwe, indicating plans for expansion within the country. Zimbabwe has been making strides in renewable energy, including the launch of the Melfort Solar Power Plant, its largest solar power facility to date.
Solar Power for Reliable Zimbabwe solar data centers
ChillMine and AAAS Energy will collaborate to develop solar power stations to support ChillMine’s data centers. These stations will help reduce the data centers’ reliance on the national grid, which has been plagued by frequent power outages. Considering the intricacies involved in the manufacturing process of solar panels, this initiative marks a significant step towards energy independence. The partnership will also explore other renewable energy sources, such as wind and hydropower, to further diversify the energy mix. Zimbabwe is also exploring innovative solutions like building a 150 MW floating solar project.
Strategic Growth and Sustainable Energy for Zimbabwe solar data centers
ChillMine CEO, Tawanda Chiwira, said the partnership was a key step in the company’s growth strategy. “Zimbabwe is a strategic country for us because of its growing demand for data and its abundant renewable energy resources,” he said. “We are committed to providing a sustainable and reliable energy source for our data centers.” Understanding the basics of manufacturing solar panels provides insight into the scale of this commitment.
Job Creation and Skills Development in Zimbabwe solar data centers
The partnership is also expected to create new jobs in Zimbabwe’s renewable energy sector. ChillMine and AAAS Energy plan to invest in training and development programs to help build the skills needed to support the growth of the industry.
