HSE Group’s Ambitious Renewable Energy Expansion in Slovenia
HSE Group, Slovenia’s leading energy producer, is significantly expanding its renewable energy portfolio to support the country’s transition to a low-carbon future. Building on its strong foundation in hydropower, the company is now concentrating on solar and wind energy projects to help meet Slovenia’s 2030 goal of generating 43% of its electricity from renewable sources.
HSE’s Current Renewable Energy Portfolio
HSE Group is Slovenia’s largest producer of electricity from renewable sources, with a total installed capacity of 1,003 MW across its power plants. Annually, the company generates 3,000 GWh of electricity from renewables—enough to power approximately 200,000 Slovenian households.
The company’s hydroelectric assets include eight large and several small power plants. The most notable of these is Dravske elektrarne Maribor, Slovenia’s largest renewable energy producer, with an installed capacity of 600 MW. HSE also manages the significant Soške elektrarne Nova Gorica, which has a capacity of 155 MW.
In addition to its hydroelectric assets, HSE Group is expanding its solar power capabilities. The company currently operates the ZlatoliÄŤje and Prapretno solar power plants, which have a combined installed capacity of 8 MW.
Solar Power Expansion Plans
To meet Slovenia’s renewable energy targets, HSE Group is rapidly expanding its solar power capacity. The goal is to install 1,000 MW of solar power by 2030, which could contribute more than 10% of Slovenia’s total electricity generation.
In 2024, HSE Group plans to commission three major solar power plants: a 29 MW facility in Trbovlje, a 15 MW plant in Maribor, and a 9 MW site in Krško. Beyond its large-scale projects, HSE Group is also developing smaller solar installations across Slovenia. These initiatives in Prebold, Hrastnik, Brestanica, and Jesenice will add a combined 47 MW of capacity.
HSE Group’s strategy also includes collaborating with local governments, businesses, and individuals on rooftop solar panel installations. This initiative is projected to add 50 MW of capacity by 2026, further supporting Slovenia’s shift towards renewable energy.
Wind Power Development
HSE Group is making substantial investments in wind power, developing large-scale wind farms to help meet Slovenia’s renewable energy goals. The target is to achieve over 100 MW of wind power capacity by 2030.
One of the company’s most ambitious wind power endeavors is the 44 MW Ojstrica wind farm, slated for completion by 2028. This project will generate enough electricity to power 30,000 Slovenian households, marking a significant contribution to the nation’s renewable energy mix.
Additionally, HSE Group is planning several other wind power projects, including the 40 MW Zajčica wind farm and the 20 MW Košuta wind farm. These projects will further diversify Slovenia’s energy mix and decrease its dependence on fossil fuels.
Future Goals and Innovations
HSE Group’s long-term vision is to become a leader in renewable energy production within Slovenia. As part of this vision, the company plans to continue its investments in solar and wind power, aiming for 1,000 MW of solar capacity and 150 MW of wind capacity by 2030.
HSE Group is also exploring other renewable technologies like geothermal and biomass, which have the potential to contribute significantly to Slovenia’s future energy landscape.
