Suriname PV Microgrid Provides Power to Remote Villages

A transformative energy project is bringing 24-hour electricity to communities deep within Suriname’s forests. In April 2024, the first site of the project’s second phase was completed, delivering continuous power to 12 remote villages and benefiting around 1,550 residents. This initiative, led by POWERCHINA, marks a significant leap from the previous reality, where power was available for only four to six hours daily via diesel generators.

The Suriname Village PV Microgrid Project is a multi-phase effort designed to bridge the country’s rural electrification gap. While national electricity access in Suriname exceeds 98%, it drops below 90% in remote regions. This project directly supports the nation’s goal of achieving universal access by 2030.

The first phase, completed between 2019 and 2020, established the project’s foundation by building a system with 650 kilowatts of solar capacity and 2.6 MWh of energy storage for two villages. The current, more ambitious second phase will ultimately see the construction of five microgrids along the Suriname River. Once complete, these systems will serve a total of 34 villages and are projected to generate approximately 5,314 MWh of clean energy annually.

Each microgrid is a self-contained power system, combining photovoltaic panels, battery storage, and a diesel generator for backup. This hybrid setup ensures a stable and reliable power supply, drastically reducing dependence on costly and polluting diesel fuel. By enabling local generation and consumption of renewable energy, the microgrids offer a cost-effective and adaptable solution for communities far from the national grid.

During a handover ceremony for the new site, Suriname’s President, Chandrikapersad Santokhi, highlighted the project’s significance. “The microgrids will provide a more stable and reliable power supply to the villages, significantly enhancing the quality of life for residents and fostering local economic development,” he stated, commending POWERCHINA for their work. The project is a critical step in improving living standards and advancing modernization for thousands of people in Suriname’s interior.
