Yinson Launches 97MWp Matarani Solar Plant in Peru

Yinson Renewables, a subsidiary of Yinson Holdings Bhd, has brought its 97MWp Matarani Solar Plant in Peru to full operational status. Located near the city of Arequipa, the plant began exporting power in July 2024 and is now the country’s second-largest solar energy producer.

Matarani Plant to Power 62,000 Households in Peru

As the company’s first project in Peru, the Matarani solar plant is projected to generate 260 GWh of energy annuallyโ€”enough to meet the electricity needs of approximately 62,000 Peruvian households. This output will also offset over 56,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. The facility, equipped with nearly 150,000 panels spread across 750,000 square meters, has a long-term power purchase agreement with Orygen, Peru’s Actis-supported renewable energy producer.

The Matarani solar plant

โ€œThe Matarani Solar Plant is a significant milestone for Yinson Renewables, being our first in Peru and the region. With this plant now fully operational, Yinson Renewables has created a strong foundation that will facilitate our continued expansion in the region,โ€ said David Brunt, Chief Executive Officer of Yinson Renewables.

Yinson Acquires Matarani from Grenergy Renovables

The company acquired the Matarani project from the Spanish renewable energy developer Grenergy Renovables SA earlier this year. Grenergy delivered extensive engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for the project and will also provide operation and maintenance support for the first two years.

Matarani marks Yinson Renewablesโ€™ fourth large-scale project to reach commercial operation, following the Rising Bhadla 1 & 2 and Nokh solar plants in India. Yinson Renewables is an independent renewable energy producer with a portfolio spanning the entire renewables value chain, focusing on three key regions: Latin America, Europe, and the Asia Pacific.

Yinson Renewables Expands Renewable Energy Portfolio

The company currently operates 557 MW of utility-scale renewable energy assets and maintains a development pipeline exceeding 1.5 GW, with another 3 GW of projects in early-stage development. Its Latin American pipeline includes multiple projects with a combined capacity of nearly 1 GW, which are expected to be developed within the next three to five years.

In Peru, Yinson Renewables also owns the 130-MWp Majes solar project, with its first phase expected to be ready for construction by the end of 2024.

Yinson Renewables is a subsidiary of Yinson Holdings Berhad, a Malaysian energy infrastructure and technology firm. The company operates across several sectors, including offshore energy through Yinson Production, renewable energy via Yinson Renewables, green technologies under Yinson GreenTech, sustainable investment and asset management with Farosson, and offshore marine services through Regulus Offshore.
