35 Solar PV Plants Repowered in Italy

ContourGlobal has launched a significant modernization initiative across its Italian portfolio, revamping and repowering 35 of its 71 solar PV plants. This strategic overhaul, affecting approximately half of the company’s assets in the country, is set to add around 42 MWdc of new capacity without expanding the existing land footprint, marking a major step in enhancing renewable energy generation.

A Strategic Overview of 35 Solar PV Plants Repowered in Italy

The project aligns directly with Italy’s ambitious PNIEC (National Integrated Plan for Energy and Climate) targets, which aim for 80 GW of cumulative solar capacity by 2030. Industry analysis suggests that repowering existing solar farms could fulfill 10-15% of this goal, making initiatives like ContourGlobal’s crucial for the nation’s energy transition. By upgrading aging infrastructure, the company boosts efficiency and contributes to grid stability while preserving valuable land.

The core of the project involves a comprehensive technological upgrade for each solar PV installation. Outdated panels are being replaced with higher-efficiency modules, and older inverters are being swapped for advanced models. Furthermore, many sites are transitioning from fixed-tilt foundations to single-axis solar trackers, which follow the sun’s trajectory to maximize the total solar output throughout the day.

Economic and Environmental Impact of 35 Solar PV Plants Repowered in Italy

A key commercial aspect of this initiative is that the additional capacity will operate on a merchant basis. This means the new electricity generated will be sold directly on the open market, bypassing legacy Feed-in Tariff (FiT) agreements and allowing ContourGlobal to capitalize on current energy prices. This demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to asset management in the evolving energy landscape.

The project also features a profound commitment to the circular economy. Discarded components are not simply disposed of; instead, they are meticulously recycled. According to the company, up to 97% of the materials from the old solar modules—including valuable resources like copper, silver, aluminum, and silicon—are recovered. The project also includes the recycling of old steel structures and inverters, ensuring a minimal environmental impact.

Project Progress and Future Outlook for 35 Solar PV Plants Repowered in Italy

Launched in 2024, the repowering project is well underway. Despite minor initial delays, construction has advanced, with 19 plants fully re-energized by early September. The initiative will continue through the remainder of 2024, with some activities extending into 2025, contingent on grid upgrades by network operators. Once completed, the upgraded plants are expected to generate enough clean electricity to power over 70,000 Italian households annually, significantly increasing ContourGlobal’s total solar capacity in the country.
