Kazakhstan’s Expanding Renewable Energy Landscape
Kazakhstan has solidified its commitment to a green energy future, reaching a landmark achievement with 156 renewable energy facilities now contributing a combined capacity of 3,800 MW to the national grid. This milestone highlights a period of accelerated growth and strategic investment in the nation’s clean energy infrastructure.
A Year of Dynamic Growth
The year 2025 proved to be pivotal for Kazakhstan’s renewable sector. Starting the year with an installed capacity of approximately 3.08 GW in the first quarter, green energy sources already accounted for 5.93% of the country’s total electricity generation. This portfolio was diverse, led by wind power at 1.57 GW and solar at 1.22 GW, complemented by small hydro and biomass projects.
Momentum continued to build throughout the year. By its close, the country commissioned nine new renewable energy projects, adding a substantial 503 MW of new capacity. This expansion was dominated by wind energy, with five new wind farms contributing 387 MW. Three solar plants added another 90 MW, and one hydroelectric plant brought an additional 26 MW online.
Expanding National Capacity and Impact
As a result of this rapid development, official year-end figures for 2025 confirmed a total of 162 operational renewable facilities with a combined installed capacity of 3.5 GW. This surge in green power successfully elevated the share of renewables in Kazakhstan’s electricity generation to 7%, a notable increase from 6.43% in 2024 and a clear indicator of the country’s progress towards its climate goals.
Future Trajectory and Ambitions
Looking ahead, Kazakhstan is poised to continue this impressive trajectory. The government has established a strategic auction plan for 2024-2027, which aims to attract investment for an additional 6.7 GW of clean energy capacity. Long-term forecasts underscore this ambition, with projections suggesting the nation’s renewable power capacity could soar to over 8 GW, and potentially as high as 12.9 GW, by 2035. This forward-looking strategy positions Kazakhstan as a key player in Central Asia’s transition to sustainable energy.
