Unveiling Solar Cement Honduras: 2025’s Impressive & Powerful Project

Grupo Empresarial Argos is solidifying its position as a leader in sustainable industrial practices in Central America through a significant investment in solar energy for its Honduran cement operations. The company’s subsidiary, Cementos Argos, inaugurated a major solar farm at its Choloma plant in RĂo Blanquito in September 2023. This facility, now the second-largest in the Honduran cement industry, is a cornerstone of the company’s decarbonization strategy.

The project, a collaboration between Cementos Argos and Celsia, involved an investment exceeding USD 1.2 million. It features over 2,100 photovoltaic modules designed to generate 1.6 million kWh annually, supplying 25% of the plant’s total electricity demand. This initiative follows a previous successful solar installation in 2020 at the company’s Comayagua plant, demonstrating a sustained commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. These efforts are part of a broader corporate push, which includes Celsia’s plan to invest heavily in renewable energy projects across the region.

A Model for Industrial Decarbonization

By directly powering energy-intensive cement production with on-site solar generation, Cementos Argos is creating a powerful model for other industrial players. This targeted approach to renewable integration complements larger, grid-focused developments in the country, such as the proposed 50MW Patuca Solar Farm, showcasing the diverse pathways available for achieving national energy goals. The project aligns with a global trend of localizing renewable energy supply chains, a movement also seen in initiatives like the new solar panel factory in Burkina Faso.

The RĂo Blanquito solar farm is a key component of Cementos Argos’s long-term sustainability vision, which aims to cut CO2e emissions by 46% by 2030. By displacing fossil fuel consumption, the project not only reduces operational costs but also contributes significantly to a cleaner energy future for Honduras, setting a benchmark for sustainable manufacturing in the region.
