Honduras: ESF Seafood Targets Carbon Neutrality With Rooftop Solar

In a landmark move for the global aquaculture industry, Honduran company ESF Seafood is executing a comprehensive three-year strategy to achieve carbon neutrality, spearheaded by a massive solar power installation at its shrimp processing facility. The initiative positions the Choluteca-based producer to become the first in its sector to operate entirely on renewable energy, setting a bold new standard for sustainability.

The core of this green transformation is a large-scale solar array covering the entire 11,700-square-meter rooftop of ESF’s plant. This strategic placement leverages the region’s exceptional solar potential, which boasts a high photovoltaic output (PVOUT) index of approximately 4.8, to maximize clean energy generation without consuming additional land. The project is a critical step towards the company’s goal of running on 100% renewable power.

The environmental dividends are expected to be substantial. According to Company Director Ivan Clements, the solar conversion is projected to slash carbon emissions by over 2,000 tons within its first year of operation. “Our aim is to become the first shrimp processing plant to migrate 100% to renewable energy sources,” Clements stated, emphasizing how the shift meets the rising consumer demand for products with a verifiably lower carbon footprint while supporting a sustainable local economy.

ESF Seafood’s transition is bolstered by a favorable regulatory environment in Honduras. A new law enabling commercial bi-directional meters allows the company to sell any surplus electricity back to the national grid. This not only enhances the project’s financial viability but also contributes renewable power to the local community, demonstrating a powerful synergy between corporate environmental responsibility and sound economic policy.
