For many communities and institutions in the region, the high and often volatile costs of wood and conventional energy present a major operational challenge. A reliable power supply is crucial for a learning environment, especially for essential services like preparing daily meals. Recognizing this hurdle, the school sought a solution that was not only cost-effective in the long run but also environmentally sustainable.
Harnessing the region’s most abundant natural resource—sunlight—became the clear path forward. The project tackles the energy problem head-on, providing a clean, reliable, and independent power source that will serve the school for years to come.
A Vision for a Self-Sufficient School through the Rwanda school solar project
The initiative, spearheaded by surgeon Dr. Johannes Huber, involves the installation of a comprehensive photovoltaic (PV) system on the school’s roof. This system is designed with a 57 kW night storage unit, ensuring that the school has a consistent power supply day and night, free from reliance on the grid.
This new energy system will power the school’s recently completed 3,000 m² kitchen and dining hall. This crucial facility, which provides daily meals for the entire student body, including those in inclusive education classes, was constructed in late 2025 with the help of 90 local workers, further contributing to the local economy. With the solar installation, the school can guarantee that its kitchen operations run smoothly and efficiently without the burden of high energy bills.
The Power of Partnership and Support for the Rwanda school solar project
This ambitious project was made possible through a powerful collaboration of vision and support. A key contributor is the German-based measurement technology company UWT, which demonstrated its commitment to social responsibility through its “UWT Cares” initiative. The company, along with its Managing Director Uwe Niekrawietz, generously donated a total of €10,000 to the project.
To ensure that every cent of the donation went directly to the school, the funds were channeled through the Lions Club Förderverein, a testament to the transparent and impactful nature of the support. This contribution has been instrumental in turning the vision of an energy-independent school into a reality.
