In a significant move towards sustainable industrial development, Laos has taken a major step forward in establishing a state-of-the-art green aluminum industrial park. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed to conduct a feasibility study for the ambitious project in Oudomxay province, which aims to leverage artificial intelligence and be powered predominantly by solar and other clean energy sources.
This landmark agreement brings together Laotian and Chinese partners in a collaboration poised to transform the region’s industrial landscape. The signing ceremony, witnessed by Laos’s Minister of Industry and Commerce, Malaythong Kommasith, and the Chinese ambassador, underscores the project’s national and international importance.
A Strategic Partnership for a Greener Future in the Laos green aluminum park
The MOU outlines a collaborative framework between several key entities. The local partner, Krittaphong Group, will handle local coordination and ensure regulatory compliance, bringing valuable experience from previous Laos-China projects. The main industrial investor, Guangxi Investment Group, a Fortune Global 500 company, will provide the essential technology for aluminum production and high-end processing.
The critical green energy component will be managed by CGN Lao (CGN Energy Technology Laos). As the project’s designated power supplier, CGN Lao is tasked with developing and constructing the park’s green power supply system, a cornerstone of the entire initiative.
Harnessing Solar Energy on a Massive Scale for the Laos green aluminum park
The “green” in green aluminum comes directly from the source of its power. The production of aluminum is traditionally energy-intensive, but this project aims to rewrite that narrative by using clean energy. The backbone of the park’s energy infrastructure will be a massive 1,000-megawatt solar project developed by CGN Lao in Oudomxay. This solar farm, which connected to the grid in December 2025, is on track to reach its full capacity in April 2026.
To meet the park’s substantial energy demands, which could reach up to 2,000 megawatts, additional wind and solar projects are already in the concession and pre-construction phases in Oudomxay and Luang Namtha.
Vision and Scope of the Laos green aluminum park
The proposed industrial park is vast, spanning approximately 6,279 hectares. The initial production target is set at an impressive 500,000 tons of green aluminum annually. The long-term vision extends beyond primary production to create a full-cycle aluminum production and processing hub that integrates advanced technologies like artificial intelligence to optimize efficiency and sustainability.
This project represents a strategic pivot for Laos, aiming to transition the nation’s economy from one based on resource exportation to a sophisticated, green industrial manufacturing base. Officials have emphasized that the initiative is designed to leverage Laos’s abundant clean energy potential while ensuring that local communities benefit directly from green development and technological innovation.
While construction has not yet begun, the feasibility study marks a crucial and promising first step. This AI-powered, solar-driven aluminum park could serve as a model for sustainable industrialization, showcasing how economic growth and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
