Brazil’s national energy infrastructure has taken a significant step forward with recent advancements in the TangarĂ¡ Project. Key components, including new transformers and a crucial transmission line upgrade, have been energized, enhancing the stability and capacity of the country’s power grid.

Key Developments in MaranhĂ£o

As part of Lot 03 from Transmission Auction No. 02/2022, the project recently celebrated the energizing of four new transformers at the Santa Luzia III Substation. This upgrade significantly boosts the substation’s ability to manage and distribute electricity to meet rising demand in the region. The new installations include:

  • Two 450 MVA transformers operating at 500/230 kV (TR1 and TR2)
  • Two 100 MVA transformers operating at 230/138 kV (TR3 and TR4)

In parallel with the substation enhancement, the project also completed the sectioning of the 500 kV AçailĂ¢ndia–Miranda II C-1 transmission line in the state of MaranhĂ£o. These upgrades are vital for improving the flow and reliability of power.

Strengthening Regional Connectivity

The TangarĂ¡ Project as a whole is strategically designed to bolster the power transmission network between Brazil’s North Region, including the state of ParĂ¡, and the Northeast Region, which includes MaranhĂ£o. By improving the stability and increasing the capacity of this interconnection, the project ensures a more resilient and efficient energy supply across these vast areas.

The full scope of the project involves the construction of 354 kilometers of new transmission lines and the addition of 2,300 MVA in transformation capacity. The total investment for these comprehensive upgrades is estimated at R$ 1.1 billion.

Future Outlook

With these recent milestones achieved, the TangarĂ¡ Project continues to move forward. The remaining works are scheduled to achieve commercial operation by June 2026, marking a critical step in the ongoing modernization of Brazil’s vital energy infrastructure.
