Lipton Teas and Infusions is taking a significant step towards a more sustainable future by commissioning a new 580 kilowatt-peak (kWp) solar plant at its factory in Jebel Ali, UAE. This initiative, developed in partnership with Yellow Door Energy, underscores the global tea brand’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and embracing renewable energy sources in its operations.
Powering Tea Production with the Sun
The newly installed solar plant is a considerable feat of green engineering. Comprising nearly 1,000 photovoltaic panels, the system is strategically placed on the factory’s rooftop and carports. It is expected to generate approximately 958,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity in its first year of operation.
This renewable energy will cover about 13% of the facility’s annual energy consumption, directly supporting the production of over one billion teabags each year. To ensure peak performance and resource conservation, the installation includes an advanced automated cleaning system with four robotic units, which optimizes efficiency while minimizing water usage.
A Commitment to Environmental Goals
The impact of this solar project extends far beyond the factory walls. By harnessing solar power, Lipton is set to reduce its carbon emissions by an estimated 388,000 kilograms annually. This move is a crucial part of Lipton’s global strategy to achieve net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040.
Furthermore, the project aligns perfectly with the broader environmental objectives of the nation, supporting the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative. It demonstrates how leading manufacturers can play a vital role in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
